PIA WALLÉN

DESIGN Pia Wallén is one of the most celebrated designers in the contemporary Scandinavian scene. With a career that spans over several decades and fields, she continues to deliver iconic designs that become trademarks of her vision, defined by a careful consideration of every aspect from materials, shapes and proportions to production processes and, of course, design.

Marking the second edition of Nordic Stories, the ARKET and Pia Wallén collaboration features a capsule collection of women’s ready-to-wear and interior pieces. The carefully curated catalogue revisits some of her iconic work through materials and graphic elements that belong to her usual palette. Parting from two signature materials in Pia Wallén’s portfolio – felted wool and cotton quilts – the ready-to-wear collection merges modern minimalism with a bold character and traditional crafting techniques, representing the most current expression of her long-lived connection to these qualities.

Pia Wallén ‘My working process very often starts from different projects I’ve done before. I work a lot with continuation, editing. It’s like a research process. My plan was to be a lawyer but I had a huge interest in fashion, materials, fabrics, colours and shapes, and so I changed that path. I had no choice. Sometimes I think I could sit in a cave and still create.’

Spring overshirts

Modern overshirts are inspired by functional workwear and utility garments, including the French blue work jacket, military jackets and artisan smocks. Minimally detailed and cut with extra room, they’re the perfect layer for the transitional season.

The beauty of slow flowers

By appreciating the full cycle of a plant’s life and exploring our local environment, we can deepen our connection with nature and find beauty in everything that grows and changes, says Maria Berg, floral designer and head stylist at Rosendal’s Garden in Stockholm.

Materials

Premium recycled cotton

By carefully preserving cotton fibres from textile waste and spinning them with certified organic cotton, Los Angeles-based Circular Systems creates the world’s most premium recycled cotton yarn.

The grid is an essential element of our visual identity. It represents the notion of the archive and is used to organise and display information ranging from the names of plants to fabric weights and different types of materials used in our collections. These nine squares symbolise the separate parts that together form our world, and they are also the areas where we strive to make a difference.
