Archive Bianchini-Férier

Founded in 1888 by Charles Bianchini and partners in Lyon, Bianchini-Férier is the longest continuously running silk mill in Europe. The company specialised in jacquard-woven dress and furnishing silks, and gained widespread recognition for its textiles displayed at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1889.

Bianchini-Férier’s partnership with Fauvist painter Raoul Dufy in the 1910s and ‘20s resulted in over 2,000 patterns, and is considered to have produced some the firm’s most significant works. A series of their bold floral designs were repeated in couturier Paul Poiret’s collections for over a decade. Known primarily for its fine silk velvets and silk-and-metal brocades for haute couture, Bianchini-Férier’s production also resulted in several original copyrights for modern standard fabrics.

The floral print featured in ARKET’s collection dates back to 1973, and is a part of the sizeable Bianchini-Férier Archive acquired by The Design Library in 2010.
