209 fabric Cotton blend taffeta

Originally a luxury fabric woven with highly twisted silk yarns, taffeta has been cut for dresses and gowns since the medieval period. Modern taffeta is made from both natural and synthetic filament yarns, woven in plain weave with subtle weft-way ribs. It has a pronounced ‘memory effect’ that makes the fabric shape well and crease easily, and is characterised by a rustling sound when worn.

Fabric Taffeta

Originally a luxury fabric woven with highly twisted silk yarns, taffeta has been cut for dresses and gowns since the medieval period. The name is derived from a Persian word for a ‘glossy twisted weave’, and the fabric is thought to have originated in that region.

Modern taffeta is made from both natural and synthetic filament yarn. It is sometimes woven for everyday objects like umbrellas or jacket linings, but it is still primarily a dress and skirt fabric, characterised by a rustling sound when worn.

Woven in plain weave with subtle ribs in the horizontal weft, taffeta has a smooth and lustrous surface and is crisp and delicate to the touch. It has a pronounced ‘memory effect’ that makes the fabric shape well and crease easily.

It is the high-twist yarns that give taffeta its paper-like quality, and the fabric is sometimes treated with a stiffening finish to enhance the crispness and to create volume.
