Developed in the 1970s by the Swiss military, the SM-74 pack was designed to carry a personal respirator mask and small gear. It was crafted from a heavy-duty, vinyl-coated canvas to protect the inside and its contents from both water and fire.

 

Furnished with a flap with a reinforced press-button closure, the rectangular SM-74 opened to a roomy main compartment with several pockets secured with a hook-and-loop fastener. With this construction, multiple items could be neatly organised and accessed quickly, and remained in place even if the bag would flip upside down.

 

At the back, a system of clips and buckles kept the pack close to the body and allowed for several hands-free options. This came in handy when trekking through tight bush, climbing and travelling at a pace other than walking. The bag could be carried like a haversack with its single webbing strap, both vertically and horizontally, or attached to a belt and worn at the waist.
