Tricker's shoes and boots are constructed in 260 individual processes all carried out by hand by craftsmen and women in Northampton, a centre for shoemaking in central England since the 16th century. The company was founded by Joseph Tricker in 1829 and remains a family business today. The manufacturing process has been modernised, but is still based in the same Tricker’s factory that was established in 1904. Making shoes by hand is very labour-intensive and the work is performed by skilled shoemakers with great experience in the trade. The process includes examining and hand-cutting individual pieces of leather, building a sole in multiple layers and sewing them together, before trimming and smoothing the finished product freehand. Every pair of Tricker’s is unique and individually numbered. Being handmade in every step, and stitched rather than glued, Tricker’s shoes can be unstitched and repaired by a skilled shoemaker if needed.
