Supplier Huafu

Based in Shenzhen, China, Huafu is the world’s largest supplier and manufacturer of mélange yarn in the industry. With about 30,000 employees and five production facilities all over China and Vietnam, the company has been innovative in its use of colour and composition to craft medium-to-high grade, top-dyed mélange yarns. The Chinese stock exchange-listed company has been granted 54 patents in technologies like loose-fibre dyeing and spinning since its founding in 1993. With a focus on more sustainable materials and production processes, it is making organic and pima cotton as well as recycled poly-melange yarns for ARKET.

fabric French terry

Fabric French terry

French terry is an elastic jersey fabric characterised by two completely different sides. The front has a flat and smooth surface while the back, which is worn against the skin, features a structure of uncut loops. Commonly knitted from cotton yarns, the fabric is soft, airy, and highly moisture-absorbent. The longer the loops on the back, the more moisture can be absorbed.

French terry is often used in sportswear, warmup wear and children’s clothes. The fabric’s athletic origins go back to the 1920s when a manufacturer of women’s underwear, located in Alabama, U.S., began making football jerseys for a local college team. Using the knitted underwear material to outfit the players, the factory created what ultimately became the classic sweatshirt.

TECHNIQUE Mélange

melange

Mélange yarns are made with top-dyed fibres of different shades, spun together, and are used to create heathered and luminous knitted fabrics.

From the French word meaning ‘mixture’ or ‘medley’, the process of creating mélanges has a smaller impact on the environment than dyeing a finished cloth.

Dyeing and blending fibres before spinning saves water and energy, reduces emissions and creates subtle variations that result in a much deeper, richer colour.

200O material Organic cotton

organic-cotton

Organic cotton is a more sustainable alternative to resource-intensive conventional cotton. It uses no chemicals or GMOs, and enhances the fertility and biodiversity of the soil it’s grown in. The organic cotton used in ARKET’s products is cultivated according to a strict standard and accredited by an independent certification body.

Like conventional cotton, organic cotton yarn is spun from
natural cellulose fibres. It is an extremely versatile material that’s easy to dye and can be turned into a wide variety of fabrics – from delicate voile to heavy sailcloth. Cotton cloth was first introduced to Europe around 800 CE, but it’s been found in Peruvian tombs dating from 2500 BCE. The production of organic cotton, of course, is a much more recent innovation and now accounts for less than one per cent of the cotton market overall

Supplier Flamingo fashion

Flamingo Fashion is part of a Dhaka-based conglomerate called DBL Group , one of the top-five apparel and textile manufacturers in Bangladesh. Founded in 1991, they take a holistic approach to sustainability; they have a number of environmental and organic textile certifications, and procure their raw materials from responsible sources – like the Better Cotton Initiative, which promotes better standards in cotton farming. They also offer positive working conditions for its 28,000 employees, with a day-care centre, skills development courses and a shop that sells a variety of items at subsidised prices. Flamingo Fashion is making ARKET knitted tops, bottoms and jumpers for men and women, as well as nightwear for babies and kids.
