Birkenstock is one of the world’s top footwear brands, run by the sixth generation of the founding family. Most of its shoes and sandals are still made in Germany, using high-quality and sustainably sourced materials.

brand Birkenstock

The roots of this iconic footwear brand can be traced back to 1774 when cobbler Johann Adam Birkenstock is first mentioned in the church archives of Langen-Bergheim, a city in the German state of Hesse. Continuing the shoemaking tradition, the company is now run by the sixth generation of the Birkenstock family and ranks as one of the top five global footwear brands. With over 3,000 employees, Birkenstock still manufactures most of its shoes and sandals in Germany.

The brand philosophy is built around the concept of a ‘footbed’ – a unique, anatomically shaped insole developed by the brand in the 1930s. The Birkenstock footbed is a shock absorption system with a flexible cork and latex core, and traditionally, a suede lining. The moulded shape supports and relieves pressure on the feet while walking, and exercises the leg muscles at the same time. Together with the light and durable EVA outsole, Birkenstock shoes promote good posture and support the natural rolling motion of the foot, offering comfort for many continuous hours of use.

Birkenstock uses only high-quality materials that are sustainably sourced and undergo thorough performance and environmental controls. The distinctive design of the sandals is distinguished not only by the anatomical footbed but also by individually adjustable buckle straps to ensure a good fit.
