314 fabric Cotton fil-a-fil

Fil-a-fil (or end-on-end in English) is a type of plain-weave cloth that is created by interlacing light and dark threads. The result is a crisp material used primarily for tailored shirting that appears as one solid colour, but that has more of a heathered or finely checked appearance up close.

From the French term that means ‘thread-to-thread,’ fil-a-fil is most commonly woven from cotton or linen yarns. Close to its cousin poplin, it is woven in a one-to-one square pattern. But unlike poplin, white threads are mixed with another colour to add visual depth. The close weave results in a crisp yet soft hand feel that wears well over time, even fading the way that denim might so the white threads become more visible.
